Video gambling will stay legal in Rockford. The Rockford City Council voted Monday night to not ban the machines, saying the money is needed to help fund vital road, building and other construction projects.

The Illinois seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2009 went up by two-tenths of a percentage point from November and is now at 11.1 percent, according to figures released Friday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).

The Rockford City Council is expected to vote tonight on a proposal to opt out of the Video Gambling Act. We think the council should allow the electronic games.

In an effort to capture new revenue, aldermen approved creating an annual licensing fee of $250 per video gambling terminal and a $60 fee per coin operated amusement machine for establishments that set up such devices -- such as coin-operated pool tables, dart boards or other games -- in their businesses.

But a spokesman — Greg Goldner, a one-time campaign manager for Mayor Richard M.
